The prestigious New England Journal of Medicine showed that people lost weight faster on a high protein diet than they did on a low calories mixed diet. Most people who go on Atkins-type diets eat too many carbohydrates and take in more fat normal. Consequently, many end up gaining weight.

Eating more protein while following a low fat diet may be an effective weight loss plan. Australian scientists found that people following the diet lost more weight than those following a low calorie diet. The liver converts amino acids from protein into blood sugar, which help prevents hunger. A simple but effective strategy is to take a protein supplement with every meal (15 to 30 grams) which will prevent hunger and overeating.
